Artefact1 (Research Project)

For my Artefact1, I started to build up my character in 2D. During the character development, I have sketched the character’s motions and colour to illustrate the character characteristic. The idea of this character is based on the dinosaur and it is designed for the Maths interactive game player. Therefore, I added 0-9 number at the back to stand out the meaning of “Maths”.
I am happy with my character and I decide to focus on specific detail part in the
Artefact2, for example the face emotion and the shape of the dinosaur.

This is my final piece for my Work on scrip project:

I created an almost 3 minute’s animation, I have chosen “The Matrix” as my scrip. The scrip mainly is about fighting in the Japanese - style dojo and these inspire me Kung fu is basic from China, which like “Kung fu panda”.
My idea were basic on the scrip, so I didn’t change any of the scrip except removed the ship interior scenes. I only redesign the characters and the environment.

My environment the idea is basic from “Kung fu panda”.
I created a Shaolin Monastery, because the architecture is traditionally Chinese style. The colour I used is basic on what traditionally Shaolin Monastery use, like red, white, brown…etc.
To make it in details I spend 2 months to create it, except make it in details the maps are also difficult to find therefore, some of the maps are took by myself and use Photoshop to edit it.

This image is the finial environment outlook, I added some more objects and lighting to make it look more interesting.
When I’m doing the Shaolin Monastery it take lots of memory, and lead the 3ds max always shut down. Therefore, the tree I make it on a plan, although it is flat but it’s still look 3d and good.

In this project I used another method to create my characters. Using 3ds max CAT can more easily create model, it can design a custom system or use a variety of spinal bones, head, bones, fingers and toes to create modules.
In addition, I learned another technic call “Skin” it is for joining the model and the bones together. But I find it really difficult, it took me few days to finish one character and it needs lots of patient to do it.

My ideas are from “kung fu panda” and “Mulan”, I designed Morpheus is a panda and Neo is a cricket, I draw both characters in different stature which have a strong contrast in vision.
I think Panda and can be representing China, and also it gives me a feeling of masters in kung fu. And the colour I will keep it as black and white.
Although cricket doesn’t represent anything, but it can strongly show the contrast between their statures, which is similar to the cartoon “Mulan” the characters Mushu and Cri-kee.

The bottom image is my old design of Neo that character, I design a new one because I don’t think it looks like a cricket and the arms are too short, when I animate it, it will cause a problem to move it.
The new character, I make it look thinner and the arms and legs longer. But I decided the clolour will be light blue instead of green, because I think blue will looks better.

Today is our project deadline, we have to hand in at least 10 sketches and animation. The 10 sketches include the story board, my robot and the environment.
In this project, I designed the robot and the environment separately, however, I am not able to combine both objects. I have tried to do this task by my own computer and the university’s computer, but they still are not compatible and can’t start the 3d Max program.

In short, I think my project in this term has a great improvement. Compare with last year, I used more materials and personal design. I created the movement of the robot.
I didn't set any lighting, because the robot and the teapot with running water takes too much RAM, makes me can't add more other things.

Overall, I can tell there is an improvement compare with my last year work. Also, I learned how to make the character moves and how to use the new metral in 3Ds max 2011, it makes 3Ds max more friendly to use.

Year 2 (Design practice 2)

The 1st project is to design, build and animate a model of a complex Bipedal Robot that can walk trip, slip and fall.

During the first two weeks, I learn lots of thing about how to design an animation.
For example: in 3Ds max I learned how to create the object move, how to sketch story board...etc.

This week I started to think about the story board, and sketched out the character and the environment.

The story:
The beginning of the story was the robot walking on the road. Suddenly, he saw a slice of apple peel and he felt so lucky that he didn’t slide down. And he started thinking about why there is an apple peel, therefore he couldn’t see the water behind him. Finally he stepped the water and fell down.

The second lesson I learned about to create a Walkway model.
First we start with a box, and then set it to the right size as the sheet that we’ve been given (length 100cm, Width 100cm, Height 50, Width Segs: 3 and Height Segs: 1). Then select the 4 top corner, and Extrude it. And set the high to 20cm.
Select the front 5 upper polygons and extrude them to 50cm.
‘Symmetry’ set ‘Mirror Axis’ on the right hand side. Select where you want to flip too.

Virtual Environments: 3ds Max

This is the first time I used ‘3ds Max’, which mean it is new for me. I think this software is different between the others such as, Photoshop, Flash…etc.
The different was there are 4 different view ports, Top, Left, Front and Perspective.
The first lesson I learn about how to use the basic thing of 3ds Max. Basically ‘3ds Max’ are basic on few different parts; main toolbar, command panel, view port, view port configuration, active time segment and time slider and view port controls.
I also drew a model of a house with a door way, firstly was draw the out two line of the house and select ‘Extruded’ and set the ‘Amount’ to 1.0cm (that is the floor).
Than attach line1 to line2, then select ‘Extruded’ again and set the ‘Amount’ to 200cm and ‘Segments’ to 3, (that is the wall).
In addition, is add a door way, first select and move the 1st segment to the near the bottom wall and the second one move to the top wall. Then press ‘Slice plane’ and move to the place where you want to slice, and then switch off the slice plan, after delete where the door needs to be and delete it. Lastly find the ‘Bridge’ button and select the doorway borders, than is done.

This week I did the editing for my film by using Movie maker; I linked all the bits and pieces of the scenes and sounds together.

It was my first time to edit a film. The feeling was very different from filming, and I think editing films is more difficult then filming it, because you also need to add different effects and sounds to it, where you only need to hold the camera stably and filming from the correct angles and positions when you are filming. Although this sounds easy, you still need to be skilful in order to do so. However, both experiences were very valuable and useful for building up my skills on movie making.

Difficulty for shooting:
- When we shooting is hardly like what we imagine.
- Might have to reshot, because the outcome isn’t what we looking for.
- Build up the footage

* Every time when we shooting it we should zoom in to a particular object first, then zoom back out and focuses, so we can easily capture what we want (imagine).

Feedback:
- Feedback is so importing, it can help us to improve, and therefore we can make a better film.
- Learning outcome is about feedback.

Editing:
- How to put all together and does it give the feel of the story.
- Try to put things together or does it work or not?
- Can we see a film? Not just put all together, it has to like a film.

Week 3 - Moving images

We learn about the basic of how to use the video camera and how to setup the microphone. Professional video cameras, such as those we are going to use for film; these are mobile. Such cameras generally offer extremely fine-grained manual control for the camera operator, often to the exclusion of automated operation.

- We are filming it in DV, not HDV
- Change all the setting to manual, therefore we can more easily to control the lighting and contrast)

Week 1 we divided into group of 4, and given a script to do a presentation about it. The scrip is about a man is in counselling room, he seems to want help. In the conversation they have, we (the viewer) are put through a series of flashbacks where we see this man being socially negative; and behaving in a way that upsets not only his life but other peoples too.
His punk mentality is the main focus of this short film, he is aggressive, anti-social and arrogant, but in a way, intriguing.

And we have to additional scene and it is about:
Our idea was too add an extra scene which would come in the narrative; at the end of the film, that would use the device of a flashback, and add explanation to why Max is in counselling, perhaps something negative that would explain his behaviour.

In our group we separate into different task - producer, director, lighting, sound and editing. I am in charge for lighting and editing I’m going to do it with another group mate.

Week 4, during the lesson we carryon what we working on, this week I start to create the background the question pages. (I think different backgrounds can gain the interest of the user.) As I said before, the backgrounds I will keep it simple not too attractive, but there will be relate to the quiz and the host.
(like Buzz Quiz), I don’t want to use too bright colour, and because I want the questions and the answer boxes more stand out rather than the backgrounds. I used Photoshop to draw the backgrounds, but I didn’t edit any effects on. Each background have the own feature, and some related to the questions.

Week 3 I learn about how to add sound and importing video, by learned these it gains the interesting of the game. I think have a question about a video it would be quite fun and sound effect can directly affect the quality of the game.
Why I said so, because last term I created an interactive narrative but I didn’t add any sound effect, after that it make me understand sound is really important.

Video:
By embedding the YouTube player into your flash application you are effectively loading another SWF file into your SWF. The API allows your SWF to talk to and control the YouTube player SWF.
And add the video, just easily type the web address to the importing video.

Sound:
Flash is capable of only playing mp3 files and not other sound format.
By editing its Linkage properties, right-click the sound file, select Linkage to open up the linkage window. Check the box for Export for Action Script and change the Class name to MyFavSong. Press OK, you should get the same warning message you get for creating any Class with external definition file. Simply press OK to continue. That should export our sound file as an ActionScript Class called MyFavSong.

Week 2 - What I learn?

The second week I did a practice exercise about how to import images and to make it as movieclip and uses the ←↑↓→ buttons to control the images to move.

This is so different from what I learned before, for the 1st time I find that so difficult because I couldn’t make it move, it keep telling I got error. But finally I can manage to do it. The 1st time I didn’t success because I didn’t create a new movieclip library

Except working on the lessons, during my own time I started to think about the idea.
I drew a spider gram to help me to get all the ideas together, for example: what age’s group should it for? What should the overall looks like? What colour? (Soft colour?)…etc.

The first lesson I learned about how to add score and link the pages together. I found that quite easy because last term I did a similar things before. So for me it is quite easy to pick up.

These is the action scrip for, when press button A or button B or button C, it will go to next frame2 and it will automatic helps you add up the marks that you got.

Research - Big Brain Academy

This is another game (Big Brain Academy) that I think suit what I want for, although

I haven’t target the age’s group but this game tells me the images in 2Ds can be

look good as well, because this game the images wasn’t created in 3Ds but overall

it is a really professional game. From this, I can tell images drawn in 2Ds can be performs

well too. And it doesn’t have to be complicated, simple can also be good.

Except that I like the colours, most of the things are in soft colours which make the game looks comfortable. This inspires me to use soft colours for the game that I’m going to create.

Research - Buzz: Master Quiz

The quiz that I’m going to design is basic on the game ‘Buzz: Master Quiz’. I think this is a really successful quiz game, for this game you'll have three types of quiz rounds to go through to begin with, but as you play and earn medals, that number will expand to 15 rounds of Picture This (a photo slowly becomes clearer and you have to answer a question based on it), Fastest Fingers (buzz in super-quick, dude), and Virus Challenge.

Practice Development

Active learning is allowing to the student to learn more about the subject, and make them more interest and gain their knowledge.

From my last school, I created a website using Dreamweaver and a database using Access. After that I am more confident for using Dreamweaver, I’m so looking forward that I could learn more about Dreamweaver and other software.

Reading: I like to read books about how to use the software, for example: CS4 Flash can use to create lots of different type of things, like interactive game, flash game…etc.
In addition, magazine – l like to update myself to the world, like any new technology, software…etc

Watching: in my spare time I love to watch TV and movies. I like to watch something about ‘love’, most of the movie and TV the script is more about ‘love’. Recently I have watched ‘it’s complicate’.
I like to compare the two different between of TV and movies. Both of those are care about the script, TV is more care about the composition and movies more care the filming style.

Here is my final pixilation piece. I am very pleased with the outcome.
The time I took for the project, is more than I thought. I think is because the smarties are too small, so while I was trying to move the smarties, need to move carefully, if I move too far away from the steps before, it will directly affect the film.

I really enjoy doing this project, specially the editing, because I can play around with Photoshop and add more effects on the photos. I changed the brightness and the contrast, and also I add an effect - water paper.

Overall, I’m very pleased with the music (Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head), it make the whole piece more interesting and it combine with the film really well.

idea for my pixilation project`` :D

I am going to use smarties to create a sequence of frames.
My idea is shows how the tree’s different during the four seasons, summer, spring, autumn and winter. I decide to use smarties because it lots of colour and it gives people a happiness feeling.
The film will be about 1 minute, because if the film too long I think the audiences might lose the interest.

This photo I took it from one of the exhibition in Hong Kong, this photo using different type of candies to made. Which i think is quite suitable for my idea, and also it is a good references.

Practice of pixilation pieces - Eating and Drinking``

I just did 2 short practice pieces of pixilation, I prefer the ‘Drinking’ rather than the ‘Eating’, because the ‘Drinking’ look more interesting. I thought about the scene, and the position of the items. In my opinion, pixilation is something surreal, therefore both of mine practice pieces I based on that thought.

This idea is show a person is drinking, but I change it the finger to represent a mouth and I placed the glasses on the edge of the cup to make it looks like an eyes.

This idea is a hand eating, and I capture the eating process of the hand.
I did it quite roughly, because it is my first tryout.

Pixilation

To create a pixilation I am going use the digital still camera (canon power shot S3 iS) capture a sequence of frames that assumes a frama rate 12 per second for a 30 second piece (360 shots) shoot more for safeties sake.

There are few things that have to consider:
- The camera have to be stability
- Narrative, skill of telling the story
- Pacing, the speed of taking the photos
- Light levels

Interactive narrative

I enjoyed creating interactive narrative, because I can create on my own, which is so different from the one-shot project.
I drew the characters and the pieces, it took me some time, but I am very pleased that what have turn out. However, if I add some sound effect I think the outcome will be much better. The reason that I didn’t add any sound include, it was because I am running out of time to doing it.

I found that adding the actions in flash was the most difficult part, when I first doing it I got no idea how it’s work, but after I tried it few times I discover that isn’t that hard.

If I could do it again, I will try to add some sound effect into it, because I think adding sound it could make the whole thing more interesting and helped create the atmosphere of the game.

I like this pixilation because it is a store and it can tell the photos edited by Photoshop, they made in black and white and some other effect that make the overall look. The dark outline and sharp of a person against a light background it looks more interesting.

I took these photos because Shanghai’s University and NTU combined to do a project. The project is about the different culture between Shanghai and England, and I had to take photos of my daily life.

There are 2 types of photography, black and white and colour.
Generally refers to all form of black and white photography, recording light
in tones of gray ranging from black and white, which is more detail then colour.

In addition, nowadays people like to use different software to edit photos like Photoshop, Microsoft Office Picture Manger…etc.
It is now rarely used black and white photography, of course, a lot of photographers in black and white photography as a means of creative expression. Color photography has not yet appeared in the era had a lot of people try to black and white photo coloring, the use of computers in use convenience and substantially reduce the difficulty of repair, using simple tools and features, it can be colored black and white photos. Except that use of computer can mix photography together, like black and white mix with colour and this combination the outcome look so interesting, which I like it so much.

After I created all the images, I used flash to link them together to make interactive narrative. This was the first time use Adobe Flash CS3, I found it so difficult to use, however I after I learn the basic skills of how to link the images together and I keep practices, I found that it wasn’t that difficult that I think.
I like learning how to use new software, because I am not only learning for one single thing, it also can help me to improve my other works, for example: to create a professional website it need to know how to using Flash or might need to use Photoshop for editing the images.

FLASH GAME

This is a japans’ game which used flash to create. I like this game because the 3D and the music are nice. I think the company also used 3D max, because to create a 3D game is easier to draw it by using 3D max.

This game is about “You” (the user) trapped in a house, and has to escape.
There got hint to show, if you are in the wrong way. :)

To start get start for my project I drew out a spider diagram, because spider diagram can help me do it in step by step.

Here is the spider diagram that I drew in sketch:

Moreover, I create the interactive narrative character by drawing sketch and I test it to see which colour are match.
From the 4 characters (2 boys and 2 girls) that I create, I am going to use Photoshop to draw it, as I said before I want to keep it simple, so I have to decide the characters carefully and choose between of them.

My idea for this project is about a couple planning to go for somewhere to get marry. To start with the user have to read the instruction, there are going to have two tasks that the user have to complete. The first task they have to find the place where the money are and the second tasks they have to find the correct place to get marry. There are going to have 5 places (China, France, American, Thailand and England) to chose, if the user click into the wrong place there will be an image of disaster, e.g. flood, earthquake…etc.

For overall I will keep it simple, but to make it look more interesting I will add sound and use Photoshop to edit the photos.

Interactive Narrative

From last week, I have started a new project call “Interactive Narrative” and we are going to use Flash CS3 to create it, and to make the stills images look more interesting I am going to use Photoshop CS3 as well.
To create an interactive narrative use of media – text, animation, video, still images, audio. Interactive narrative is to make use of a branching structure that forces the user to make decisions as they to move on through the narrative piece and the narrative is the main thing that to take an interest.

For this project we need to have at least 10 still images to finish off the interactive narrative, the most important things are the images, text and audio have to be seriously inspect in an attempt to indeed consider audience to establish contact.

Planing, For my porject the 1st week is planning and discover in our own group, we group all out ideas together and create a one shot film. (Develop concept & prototype)

Since I got ideas to how to start and I like to sketch down the ideas, becasue i think it can give a general description.

From the idea that we create, we also have to validate it.
Look back the ideas, and to reform.
Usability test and feedback: about how good or useful of the idea and to refine (improve it, by making small changes to it).

- Delivering -
Evaluation, is like a final piece, which mean is complect of the whole project. Like we successfully finished filming our film.

Week 3

In Week 3, we started editing the film. In the note, there is a question “What is editing?” and the answer is “Editing is the art of storytelling practiced by connecting two or more shots together to form a sequence, and the subsequent connecting of sequences to form an entire movie. I am totally agreed with this statement.

After involved in the editing work, I experienced editing is really required for team work and our computer skills. We use the Adobe Premiere CS3 to edit the film. I have no experience and skills on using this software. Fortunately, this software is not hard to use. I think the most difficult part is choosing to cut which part of the film. It is not easy to determine to cut on the part which can also tell the story to the ordinance.

Week 2

The second week we started filming our film, however, we cannot found all the equipments that we need, but finally we changed our idea, but it still based on doctor.

The new idea is about “Swine Flu”. In that film there is five characters, the doctor, two other practise students, the patient and his friend. And I performed one of the practise students. I don’t have any script in this film and I just need to express the emotion. However, this is quite challenging for me.

This film is about the patient having a conversation with the doctor, that scene is about how he mentions his symptom. The prospective of capturing this scene, is from the patient. Therefore, when you are watching this film, it seems like you are the patient and talking with the doctor. We had also set up the lighting inside the clinic. And I found that, it is really important to be bright enough when filming in indoor.

Compare with the first week, the second week I was involved in acting, this was really different with being a director.

Week 1

I had learnt how to film a ‘One shot film’ during the last 3 weeks. For the first week, we divided into different groups and discussing with the group members. I had learnt how to set up those equipments. For instance, I learnt the procedure to set up the camera and the essential thing is using a tripod. The duration of the film needs to be around 2 to 5 minutes. And our group has done a trail film which is about 2 minutes. The scene of this film is inside an art museum. This is my first time to be in touch with filming. I found that is really interesting and marvellous. Compare with taking photo, it has a huge different between it. For one thing, I think we have more things to consider, e.g. the condition, sound, etc, which may affect the quality of the film.

Our group decided to do a film about doctor having an operation, this idea is from one of my group member. We used this idea as first step, and we all do some research about it. I think ER (which is a medicinal drama) is suit with our topic. When I was watching this drama, it seems like I am holding the camera to film the scene or I am the character of that drama. For example, I am patient who is lying on the bed and looking to the doctors.

For deeply research, I have searched another film that also relates to the idea. For examples, Harry Potter 1 the opening, when Harry looks out from his room’s window.

This scene also shows the feeling of the character; the weather and the music bring us into the movie, which I think is a good idea to consult.

One shot / Single shot

One shot / Single shot – mean finishing the film in one take.

Many films use single shot as part of telling the stories, for example: ‘Singing in the ring’.

“Singing in the ring” is a 1952 comic musical film, directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen. The cast is included Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Debbie Reynolds. This film is a transition from silent films to "talkies."

The famous part of that film is Gene Kelly sings the title song “Singing in the rain” and dance with the umbrella, and some parts of the shot are film in one take.

I like the way that Kelly films it, part of it was entire shot in one take. The music and the dance bring the audience into the film. It is a really good film!

yesterday i created a pin hold camera!!!!
Which was great fun~

However, the photos that I took wasn't that success_______``
I guess it was becasue of the weather....and the timing...

BUT STILL A GOOD EXPERIENCE******

On the other day we did white board animation, which is really interesting.
i found out that is really hard to create a successful piece of work, becasue you have to count
how many shot until the end of the animation, and by the time you drawing.

But i love doing it :)
